I’m having
flu since last Friday (very nice XMAS for me…), my head was about to explode so I had not too much contact with my boxes. I’ve been about three days at home because the doctor told me to stay away from cold air, smokes and so on…I need some fresh air, even if this means going to work. I’ll be back working tomorrow, because passing three days without working you need some medical papers to get paid from the “Seguridad Social” (alike
NHS in
UK).
In further posts I’ll write about
Arch Linux, last
Linux distro I’ve been messing with, I found it reading an
article on osnews.com and I see some interesting points to talk about.
It’s XMAS and finally I’ve could get my hands on my new WRT54GS (
1,
2,
3). It is alreday running Satori firmware from
Sveasoft, I’m able to connect my laptop via
wifi in a totally unsercure environment, log into the router via
SSH, tomorrow I’ll try to configure some security features to be more confy using my laptop.
Here some interesting links:
SSH access (Spanish)
OpenWRT (another firmware)
downloads from linksysinfo.org
Finally
optize sent
my XMAS gifts. The packaging was not as good as I supposed, you can see
here and
here. The UPS, came just with the original box from
APC, but…I don’t know maybe they trust
UPS lot more than I do. Now I have to wait till tomorrow to get my first present, it’ll be
WRT54GS, the two others will come with “Three Magic Kings“.
Looking for some usernames/passwords to authenticate against some ADSL routers, I’ve found
this on-line petition, which claims about broadband networks situation in
Spain. Finally, I’ve found somebody else worried about this, I was aware about Europe/USA ’s situation, even some South American countries have better pipes than us (don’t take offense here), since I was living in
England I saw a real situation where you can get 2Mbps for less than I’m currently paying for 512Kbps/128Kbps (keep in mind England is not the cheapest country in Europe). I’m really angry about this, I’m a bandwidth lover living in an underdeveloped country (technologically talking).
So, please if anybody is reading this, I’m asking you to sign
the petition if you haven’t signed it already.
These days I’ve been trying to learn some
LaTeX, everybody’s told me how wonderful it is but I’ve ever had a moment to spend with it. Now, I’ve got a good point to try it because I’d like to write my London guide with a real documentation system.
ATM, I’m able to start a document (with article class), include an abstract, start sections and include images, the only trouble I’m having is with indenting the first line on paragraphs.
Here my firsts lines with
LaTeX, they are just some shots, nothing for being released. Also, there’s a set of makefiles to generate dvi, ps and pdf files, BSD users note they won’t work with BSD make, use
GNU make instead.
Watching
my feeds as I use to every morning, I’ve found an exciting new titled
“Top 10 software innovations of 2004″. There are some interesting applications listed, most of them are made for/by
M$, but two big
Open Source projects showed up. They are
OpenOffice which is the 8th and
Mozilla Firefox, THE WINNER!!.
I’d like to congratulate everybody from
Mozilla Project who somehow has been involved with
Firefox development, they all have done a great job.
I can say it,
Firefox’s my daily browser (on
Unix, but also on
Windoze), it helps me a lot with some of its
extensions, like
Gmail extension,
Bloglines, or even a dictionary searching extension.
I’ve only had one problem using this excellent browser, it seems like
Windoze version does not free resources properly, because after hours browsing with lots of tabs, my system’s responsiveness (and also Firefox, of course) uses to decrease a lot, I mean more than
Windoze by itself uses to do. IIRC, this is known by
Mozilla Project and someone should be working on it for sure.
From here, my little space
, I’d like to recommend this great browser to everybody,
download it! and give it a shot! it’s worth it.
It’s time to buy gifts! My family (mum, grandma, and so on…) has been asking me what I want/need for buying me xmas presents. I didn’t really know what I want, but now I do
, I’ve been
google‘ing for products/gadgets I could need. And after some hours, finally I’ve got three winners:
The two
Linksys products have
Linux inside, that’s actually most of my interest about them, I’m quite suprised with all those little devices running some kind of mini-distro for embedded systems and I wanna play with them.
Finally, but not less important, the UPS. It’ll be great because my father’s hobby is the electricity and he enjoys playing around with some himself-designed circuits and I’ve got power failures because him. I hope it’ll be supported by
apcupsd.
I’ve been in London today, it was great, as it was the first time I visited it. I will not explain any further detail because I’m too tired an I’ve got to set my suitcase up yet! Im gonna home tomorrow. In few days I’ll try to write a little guide about my trip, with some pictures, some tricks about moving around London and so on.
Hey! here I am posting from my
laptop at my friends’ home, I’ve been using a neighbor’s wlan till my friends have enabled their. Everything was great when I arrived, the flight was ok, I flew with
ryanair, I think the plane was better than when I flew with
easyjet. I was quite surprised with my
MP3 player, the battery worked great, about 8h and still 2/3 left. Last night we were drinking a little bit where some friends work (we’ve got some discounts
, it was great, I saw some english people I met last year, and we’ll go out tonight, I guess we all will have great time.
I’ve been shopping this morning with
raver his girlfriend and Angel (raver’s friend), I bought a
Memory Stick and some
clothes.
That’s all for now, I’ll post as soon as I will be recovered from this night.
Well, I guess the subject says all about this post…I’m having some holidays at
work and I’m going to visit some friends I left there last year.
I’ll be posting some pictures I’ll take with my
new camera, let’s see how it works…I hope I’ll have a great time.
